Delivering Effective Creative Content in Times of Disaster

There’s no time to waste when attempting to reach and connect disaster survivors with support services.

Key Benefits

For agencies responding to natural disasters, success depends on clear communication, thoughtful design, and the ability to act fast.

  • Quick Response: Our ability to quickly understand FEMA’s needs and work collaboratively between the prime agency Yes&, the client, and internal stakeholders was key in meeting the short deadlines on this project.
  • Strategic Messaging & Design: Simple, concise messaging and creative design delivered the most important information to the public in an easy-to-digest manner, prompting a greater response from those in need.
  • Previous Experience: Our extensive experience with government contracts, short timelines, nationally broadcast video content, and professional voiceover enabled iostudio to produce effective, high-quality work in a short timeframe.

Situation

After Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) needed to quickly reach survivors who had not yet applied for assistance before the deadline. FEMA also needed to remind applicants to check the status of their existing applications and update their contact information—critical for ensuring aid reached displaced survivors.

Solution

Over the course of 21 days from kick-off to final delivery, iostudio created 14 North Carolina-specific and evergreen, broadcast-ready video assets—including professional voiceover talent (male and female). During the project, deliverables were provided over five phases where iostudio created a mix of social media content (videos only), radio spots, and PSAs (videos).

Impact

Within two months of launch, the campaign achieved:

  • 235 million impressions across TV, radio, social, digital, and print
  • 295,000 sessions to the landing page with 97.2% engagement
  • 1:31 average time onsite per visitor
  • 8,900 new applications for assistance
  • 8,900 existing applicants checked their statuses

Why It Matters

Partnering with Yes&, iostudio’s goal was to create TV, radio, and social media content that was quick to market, flexible to messaging shifts, adaptable across platforms, and used evergreen messaging to support future efforts and allow for reuse of the creative assets.

With client direction, iostudio produced nationally-broadcast video, radio, and social content that showed a balance of FEMA workers in the field, recovery efforts, and a limited number of graphic visuals of natural disasters so as not to retraumatize victims. We used professional voiceover talent with licensing to cover national, in-perpetuity usage.

Campaign Assets

For the social media content, we created horizontal, vertical, and square versions of the commercials. Each video had a :6 and :15 version. For the universal videos, there were two core messages: Apply Now and Stay in Touch.

The video spots focused on FEMA workers actively providing support to disaster survivors.
